Getting software for your business or to use on your home computer is always fun, but that doesn’t mean that it’ll do absolutely everything you want it to do. If you like to modify your software so you can get the most out of it, and you’re tech savvy enough to do that, you’ll want to consider open source software. That way you can change the source code and make the software do different things, instead of only having it available to do what it would do when you first got it. Most software is not open source, but you can still find plenty that is.
Check around for open source software, and find the option that most easily meets your needs. In addition, make sure that you know enough about changing the software – or know someone who does – so you can make the modifications to it that you want. If you aren’t going to do that or don’t know how, there’s very little benefit in buying software that’s open source. For the people who want to make the changes to the software, though, it’s great to be able to change and adjust the software as your business grows and changes.
When you’re looking for open source software, be sure that you’re paying close attention to what you’re really getting for the money. Some options cost a lot more than others, and you don’t want to buy something that you could have gotten for much less through another company and another program. That happens all too often with people who don’t know much about open source software, and it can stop them from getting what they really want and need at a price that they’ll be happy with. If you have to have someone do the open source work for you, be sure to factor that into the cost.
